The situation is dire -- the first wolf pups to be born in the Colorado wild in the past 80 years are presumed dead, after three bloody and lifeless carcasses were found at the border of Wyoming. While these precious canines were protected in their homeland of Colorado, they stood no chance against trophy hunters as soon as they set their tiny paws across state lines. The baby gray wolves from Colorado were part of the only remaining pack in the state -- their birth was a symbol of hope, and they were integral to repopulation efforts, earning them ESA protections from the state. But wolves aren’t bound by state lines, and in Wyoming, it’s completely legal to senselessly murder these beloved animals, even without a permit. Recently, Yellowstone National Park lost a record high of 25 wolves, leaving only 89 within its borders. The news came at the heels of a recent report that outlines a key finding: Poaching is a substantial threat to wolves, especially during state-sanctioned hunts. Instances of poaching during these seasons increased by an astonishing 658%!
But trophy hunters show no signs of stopping the slaughter, and their actions have contributed to the gutting of the Endangered Species Act and protections for wolves, bears, and other vulnerable species.
What’s worse -- hunters are using brutal, merciless methods to torture and kill these innocent creatures for sport. Montana, Idaho, and Wyoming allow some of the most horrific hunting practices, like choking wolves to death in snares, running them over with snowmobiles, and even dynamiting nursing wolf mothers and pups in their dens.
After watching their mothers get viciously murdered, pups can suffer from hypothermia, starvation, and predation without them. Yet trophy hunters and Big Oil lobbies are actively fighting back against protections for these precious creatures. The Biden Administration has gone so far as to file an appeal to remove some critical protections for wolves, which could push this vulnerable species closer to EXTINCTION.

Wolves are a keystone species, meaning their thriving populations are vital to a healthy ecosystem. They help keep elk and deer populations in check, allowing other plant and animal species to flourish. The remains of their kill redistribute nutrients and feed scavengers.
Wolves began to make a slow but promising recovery over the past six decades. But this recovery is under threat as states in the northern Rockies refuse to grant them ESA protections, and others are selling off the public lands they live in, shrinking the areas where they can be safe.
In the last decade alone, more than 3,200 wolves have been killed, leaving only 6,000 wolves in the lower 48 states. We can’t let this slaughter continue, all for the sake of greedy corporate interest.
