It's going to take bold, ambitious action to stem the toxic tide of plastics in our oceans, rivers and lakes. Turtles, whales, seabirds, fish, mollusks and even the plankton at the base of the food web are counting on us.

Last week we petitioned the EPA for an immediate halt to the plastic industry's discharge of plastic pollution. Its planned production boom would bury our oceans in an even greater wave of trash.

The only way to keep plastic out of oceans is to shut down the production of throwaway plastic at its source.

An estimated 8 million tons of plastic trash are dumped into our oceans every year. Yet sea turtles that ingest as few as 14 bits of plastic have an increased risk of death. Whales not only consume plastic when they eat, but inhale it when then surface to breathe.

Right now industry is filling waterways with tiny plastic pellets and toxic chemicals under lax rules from decades ago. It has to stop — and our petition is the first step.

It's the duty of the EPA to protect species and their habitat. But the current administration, which gloats over how many straws it can sell, instead wants to turn oceans into dumping grounds for plastic waste. And the creatures of the ocean are suffering for it.

We have to stop the industry's planned plastic boom and make it clean up its mess.
