Friends: Lifesaving cholera vaccines are arriving in Haiti this week. They’re being sent from the global stockpile that PIH advocacy helped establish almost a decade ago.
We have led mass cholera vaccination campaigns in the past—in Haiti, Sierra Leone, and Malawi—and our work in Haiti proved to the world that a cholera vaccination campaign could be successful even in the most impoverished of places.
We’ve seen how well these vaccines work. They will save lives and help end this outbreak. This work is especially urgent for children under five years old. They’re already the most vulnerable to cholera, and now, with so many facing immune-compromising malnutrition, the danger is even greater.
These vaccines will protect children and adults for five years, but they can only save lives if they are delivered in time. We must administer them as fast as possible.
