Hi John, Summer here.
I am so proud to be the Congresswoman-elect for Pennsylvania's 12th Congressional District. Right now, my team and I are preparing to hit the ground running once I'm sworn into Congress in January, so I wanted to take a moment away from the memos and meetings to reach out directly.
It's important to me that you know why I decided to run for Congress and what I hope we can achieve working together. In a moment I'll share my story with you, but first, I have a favor to ask:
After law school, I came home to Western PA and organized for Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton in 2016. The following year, I led a successful campaign to unseat local school board members who failed to address repeated incidents of police and faculty violence against students at my old high school.
At that time, the thought of running for office had never crossed my mind. I was someone working in the background who really believed in the power of organizing. I wasn't someone who had political connections or political networks.
But I realized my community was being left behind by the politicians we elected. So I decided to stand up for my community and run for State Representative, winning with nearly 70% of the vote against a 20-year incumbent.
And on November 8, 2022, we made history by electing the first Black woman to ever represent Pennsylvania in Congress. We’ve built a powerful grassroots movement that reaches every corner of our district and beyond, and I know we can finally win on key priorities like a Green New Deal, Medicare for All, and the PRO Act.
Once the new Congress begins, Republicans will control the House of Representatives, so I can't make progress without the support of people like you. Will you make a gift today to help power our fight for racial, economic, and environmental justice?
