Dear allies,

As 2022 comes to a close, we’re thinking about all our hard work and victories. Together, we saw significant investments through the American Rescue Plan Act funding toward our Pilot child care program to support working-class parents on career paths into the unionized construction industry, assisted in organizing a successful campaign to pass the Fair Share Amendment, fought and won a three-year energy efficiency plan established by the Department of Public Utilities, and more!

While we’ve achieved so much this year, our fight continues. This holiday season, we are using our time to recharge, celebrate, and get ready for another momentous year. We are excited about our upcoming work in 2023 and look forward to fighting alongside all of you.

Standing up for anti-displacement zones
On Tuesday, City Life/Vida Urbana took bold action at Boston City Hall to support anti-displacement zones, which are used as a tool to protect working-class people from displacement in areas that are especially sought after by investors because of development initiatives, public improvements, and amenities like new transit stops. These developments continue to place financial pressure on Greater Boston residents and communities of color, as rent and overall cost of living increase throughout these improvement areas. Our communities deserve public improvements without getting displaced!

As we face continued large-scale developments and planning initiatives such as the East Boston Master Plan, the Chelsea Creek Municipal Harbor Plan, or the Encore Casino in Everett, we must continue to raise our voices to ensure equitable, affordable, and inclusive development. City Life/Vida Urbana and activists alike are speaking out in support of anti-displacement zones to ensure working families can continue to live and thrive, as Chelsea, Everett, and other Greater Boston areas undertake rapid infrastructure plans. We stand with you!

Climate call to action for cleaner air!
This week, Cambridge Mothers Out Front held a climate call to action to demand cleaner air in our communities. As travel increases this time of year, East Boston families face higher exposure to pollution from vehicle and air traffic at Logan Airport. Idling at Logan generates 1 million pounds per month of air pollution, causing a higher risk of asthma, heart disease, and more. Activists have raised their voices in demanding that Massport enforce the No Idling Law, however, only small signs were put up.

Signs are not enough to protect children, families, and our communities from getting exposed to vehicle and air traffic pollution. Thank you, Mothers Out Front, for holding Massport accountable by demanding real enforcement and community engagement on this issue!

Progress to reduce youth homelessness in Boston
In their new union contract, the Boston Teachers Union and the City of Boston agreed to expand a pilot program with the goal of eliminating homelessness for families of students in Boston schools within five years. Based on recent data, we're already on the right track! In just three years, Boston’s youth homelessness has significantly decreased ([link removed]) by 44% since receiving $4.7 million in federal funds to combat homelessness among young adults. During that time, Boston housed more than 500 youths and added 277 housing units. At the start of the initiative in 2019, there were just 40 units available. We’re closer than ever before to ensuring every child has a place to call home, and we’re hopeful that the city will maintain this rate of progress toward reducing youth homelessness in our schools and communities.
