Medicare and other federal programs are on the chopping block — and this week, Congress is set to make a decision on these potential cuts. More than 63 million people could have their health care disrupted as a result of these cuts and over 6,000 participating hospitals could lose critical funding. The cuts will put rural hospitals at risk in particular, who are often the sole care provider in their communities. Billions in funding for one of our most crucial health care programs is at stake here. Hospitals and frontline workers already face challenges with current surges in respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and flu cases this winter, the ongoing pandemic, workforce shortages, and rising costs due to inflation. Congress should be prioritizing hospitals, health systems, and patient care — not cutting essential health programs that millions of Americans rely on.
