Let me introduce myself: My name is Jennifer McClellan. I’m the current State Senator for District 9, and now, I’m running to be the next Congressional Representative for Virginia’s 4th District.

I won’t lie to you, John: we don’t have that much time to whip up a winning campaign. Gov. Youngkin has set the date of this special election for February 21, 2023, and with just 2 months to get things in order, we have to hit the ground running. That’s why I’m reaching out. For me, answering the call to serve those in the 4th District is bittersweet. I entered into the State Senate on the heels of then-Senator Donald McEachin, a man who worked so hard to be the voice of his constituents, and who went on to continue the fight for Virginians in the U.S. Congress. Now, I hope to continue to live up to his incredible legacy once more, and take on the mantle of the key issues Democrats must face in the minority in Washington.

I’m ready to roll up my sleeves and get to work, John. I’m ready to take on the big fights like I have been for the past 17 years that I’ve been in office. From leading the passage of landmark laws to protect reproductive rights and voting rights, tackling climate change, investing in our schools and expanding health care, I’ve always done what I could to uplift the needs of Virginians. It’s time to bring the fight to Washington now.

I know I have big shoes to fill, but I also know the task won’t be so daunting with you by my side. I’m ready to continue the legacy of leadership in VA-04 and make history as the first Black woman from Virginia elected Congress.
