# What a year it has been for disaster response! Read on to see the ways Missouri United Methodists are serving their neighbors both at home and across the UMC connection.
Responding to Hurricane Ian

When Hurricane Ian devastated the coast of Florida this fall, Missouri responders answered the call. A team that included members from La Croix, Manchester and West Plains traveled to Cape Coral, Florida, to provide site assessments and chainsaw work.
Additionally, several responded from home by answering phones and making calls for Crisis Cleanup. This platform serves as the hotline for survivors to request help and for responders to see open cases and their status. Keeping it up-to-date is critical for the response effort.
We’re thankful for your willingness to serve sacrificially!
CMU Students Pack Cleaning Buckets

Disaster response takes many forms, and readiness is one of them. We're grateful to the students at Central Methodist University who recently used their chapel time to pack cleaning buckets! These five-gallon buckets filled with supplies support survivors after a flood, hurricane or water-related disaster.
The completed buckets were transported to New McKendree UMC in Jackson, Missouri, where Breaking Bonds ministry members helped unload them. New McKendree serves as our southeast regional hub for disaster supplies.
Packing flood buckets or hygiene kits makes a great youth group, small group or Sunday School class service opportunity. Contact Scott Burdin, mailto:[email protected] [email protected], to learn more.

Local Church Disaster Response Asset Mapping
One piece of the readiness puzzle is understanding where assets are located. When a disaster hits, information gathered ahead of time makes it easier to coordinate the help that affected individuals and local organizations need. This data has proven essential during recent flood recovery work in St. Louis.
Conference Disaster Response Coordinator Scott Burdin is working to get a better idea of where United Methodist-related resources lie in Missouri. The Local Church Disaster Response Resources Form will help us identify churches who are willing to host teams, have showers, have professionally trained church members (doctors, nurses, counselors, etc.) who are willing to help, have equipment staging areas and more.
Work with your local church to fill out the form linked below. You can start the form, submit it and re-access it later to make updates. If your church does not have any of the assets listed, or is not interested in helping, please note that on the form. All information is helpful!
