Hi John, it’s Wes Moore — Governor-elect of Maryland.
By building a diverse, inclusive movement of Marylanders across the state dedicated to making progress and leaving no one behind, we did the improbable and won this critical gubernatorial race, flipping Maryland’s governorship blue for the first time in eight years.
Our campaign also made history by electing the first Black Governor of Maryland and electing Aruna the first immigrant and first woman of color Lieutenant Governor of Maryland.
But I want to be clear — Aruna and I didn’t get into this race to make history: we did it to bring Marylanders from all walks of life together to make transformative change. We were certainly not the first ones to try — this is just more proof that progress is possible, and that Maryland is leading the way.
If you don’t know me, let me take a step back and tell you more about myself. I am the son of an immigrant, a graduate of a two-year college, a U.S. Army veteran, a Rhodes Scholar, a former small-business owner and leader of one of the nation’s largest poverty-fighting organizations, a husband, and a father.
When I was an Army captain and led soldiers into combat in Afghanistan, we lived by a simple principle: leave no one behind. But for too long in Maryland, too many of our families and neighbors have been left behind. I ran for office to change that.
“Leave no one behind” is not just a slogan. It is the value that will guide me as your next Governor. Our administration will fight to give every single Marylander the chance to succeed.
Before Aruna and I are sworn-in as your next Governor and Lieutenant Governor on January 18, will you take our welcome survey to share your top priorities and thoughts with us as we prepare to lead Maryland?
Elevate,
Wes
