Friend –

I hope this email finds you well and enjoying the holiday season. Here at the ACLU of Pennsylvania, we are simultaneously decompressing from 2022 and preparing for what's ahead in the new year.

To that point, change is afoot for our organization in 2023. A few weeks ago, I informed the ACLU-PA staff and board of directors that I am leaving my position as executive director. Over the past few years, I have felt the call to return to my home state of North Carolina to join the fight for racial, economic, and social justice. Starting in mid-February, I will become the executive director of the North Carolina Justice Center, one of the state's preeminent, progressive nonprofit organizations advocating for economic justice. My last day of work for ACLU-PA will be January 6.

I am immensely proud of everything we've accomplished together over the 11 years that I have served as ACLU-PA's executive director. We weathered the Trump administration and all of the threats to civil liberties and democracy it brought. We achieved marriage equality in PA a year before it was achieved nationwide. We defeated a restrictive voter identification requirement. We've been to the Pennsylvania Supreme Court countless times and even been to the U.S. Supreme Court twice, winning a landmark students' speech case in 2021.

Our advocacy program is bigger and stronger than when I arrived, and we've had countless victories, from narrowing the reach of the criminal legal system to protecting the right to vote to defeating numerous attempts by state lawmakers to restrict abortion access in the Commonwealth.

I am confident that the ACLU of Pennsylvania is stronger than ever and that my successor will be well-positioned to lead this organization forward.

Finally, I'm grateful to you for supporting the ACLU of Pennsylvania. Your belief in what we do means the world to me. And your support means that this work will continue under new leadership. Thank you!

Sincerely,

Reggie Shuford
