Friend,
Last week, along with a delegation of writers, I returned from a wrenching and eye-opening trip to Ukraine. While there, we bore witness to the war’s impact on Ukrainian culture, showed solidarity for the Ukrainian writers, artists and citizens who have been menaced by Russian forces, and released an original report on Russia’s crimes against culture.
This delegation is just one aspect of our advocacy work on behalf of Ukraine. In the coming months, our report will act as the foundation for our efforts to persuade the international community to treat culture as Ukrainians themselves view it: not as an afterthought or luxury, but as the very lifeblood of Ukrainian society.
The needs of writers and artists at risk are ongoing. As 2022 comes to a close, I hope you will make a contribution to support our efforts to protect those who dare to speak in repressive regimes and warzones all over the world.
