John -- our headline-grabbing moves are just the tip of the iceberg.
One of the unique things about Greenpeace is our Unearthed team. We work tirelessly to expose polluting corporations and their murky political connections.
And this year, our team found BP was linked to a huge toxic emissions scandal in Iraq. We pored over emissions data in the country and compared it to the oil giant’s published figures – and realised something didn’t add up.
Gas released during oil production is usually processed and used for power. But Iraq’s lack of infrastructure means it’s just burned off in a process called flaring, releasing pollutants straight into the atmosphere. And it turns out, BP failed to declare these emissions on their official reports.
Our investigators revealed the devastating human cost of gas flaring. In Basra, a town near a massive BP-linked oil field, cancer is becoming “like the flu”. [1]
It took a fearless team of local researchers, and a group of razor-sharp investigators to uncover BP’s role in the scandal. And our work is funded by people like you, chipping in where you can to take on some of the most powerful corporations in the world.

BP used a loophole to claim they didn’t have to include the huge emissions in their reporting. But the Unearthed team leaves no stone unturned in the search for truth.
And we’re not just holding corporations accountable. Just last year, we exposed the cosy links between big oil and UK politics – by revealing how representatives from the likes of Shell and BP told government ministers to back gas over renewable energy. [2]
Investigative journalism that confronts the powerful carries huge legal risks. But we won’t be silenced. We speak truth to power without fearing the repercussions – because we know our thousands of members are right there with us.

Sometimes our investigations can be months – even years – in the making. But our team will stop at nothing to get a story out – sometimes going undercover to get the truth from oil bosses.
And behind every breakthrough are thousands of people like you, chipping in every month to fund this vital work. Join them today and help hold corporate villains accountable. [link removed]
Together we won’t let them win.
Thank you,
Alice Ross & Crispin Dowler
