All hands on deck! Tomorrow, Friday, (12/16) 80 Starbucks stores nationwide are going on STRIKE to protest Starbucks’ draconian union-busting tactic of closing stores to crush the union drive and chronically understaffing stores. This comes on the heels of over 110 Starbucks stores and over 1,000 baristas walking out on strike on November 17th, 2022 in what was dubbed ‘Red Cup Rebellion.’
Yet, instead of coming to the bargaining table and bargaining in good faith, Starbucks decided to escalate their anti-union campaign by closing the Broadway & Denny location, the first store to organize in Seattle, on the day of one year anniversary of the first Starbucks union election win. Starbucks doubled down their union-busting, so we’re going to double down on strikes.
Here in Seattle they’ve already closed 4 unionized stores in Seattle - there are no longer any regular Starbucks stores on Capitol Hill! Starbucks is determined to maximize their profits at all costs. If that means closing a store to avoid paying a living wage and providing healthcare, they have and will continue closing stores.
Starbucks will stop at nothing. Starbucks is currently being prosecuted by the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) for over 900 violations of federal labor law, making Starbucks one of the worst violators of labor law in modern U.S. history.
Starting on December 16th, workers at union Starbucks stores across the country are going on a three day unfair labor practice strike against union store closures.
Here in Seattle a number of stores will be joining the strike wave and Starbucks workers have asked for our assistance supporting the strikes. Seattle DSA will be standing shoulder to shoulder with them on the picket line.
That’s where YOU come in! Please join a picket line!
If you can’t join a picket line, you can still stand with Starbucks workers by donating to their PNW Starbucks Workers Relief Fund. This fund supports baristas when they go on strike or face retaliation from Starbucks. In 2021 Starbucks made an eye watering $4 billion in profits. They can afford stores being shut down by strikes but workers who are facing rent and utilities, grocery bills, and gas because they can’t afford to live in the city they work, but for workers it's a serious risk and sacrifice. But it's necessary to win a living wage and healthcare from the rapacity of Starbucks.
Stand shoulder to shoulder with Starbucks baristas, please donate $5, $10, or $20 to the PNW Starbucks Worker Relief Fund today.
In solidarity,
