Dear reader,
I have been working at the Prospect as Managing Editor for
almost a year now, and already it's been one of the best opportunities
of my life. In addition to overseeing the production of five excellent
print issues, I got to argue against judicial review
<[link removed]>, report
on the Faroe Islands'
<[link removed]>fascinating
tax system
<[link removed]>,
and uncover some seedy details about a certain Tennessee Republican
<[link removed]>.
Alas, the last 20 years have not been kind to the journalism industry.
Facebook and Google devoured the advertising money that previously
supported publications across the country-and now those companies are
struggling financially, especially Facebook. Twitter, which has been one
of the Prospect's biggest sources of outreach, may collapse entirely.
This could have a negative impact on the audiences we're able to reach
and the readers we're able to cultivate, and we'll have to devote
considerable resources to rethinking our strategy in a radically changed
media landscape.
This year has only emphasized how much any decent publication free of
corporate influence needs a base of enthusiastic reader support to
function. Conservative media has a deep supply of billionaires willing
to subsidize garbage money-losing publications indefinitely, but
publications that criticize oligarchs like the Prospect unfortunately
don't. Direct support from readers like you allows us to continue
fearlessly reporting on policy and politics. I hope you'll consider a
donation.
We can't do this without your support. Become a member today for just
