Hi dear friends,

We hope you are keeping cozy as the Northern Hemisphere enters the darkest days of the year. If you’re like us, cozying up means being in the company of a good book. (Unless you’re on the other side of the globe and, like Danny Noonan, our Climate and Energy Strategist who is headed home to Australia sometime this season, are enjoying a good book under the warm sun.) Basically, Breach staff believe it’s always the right time of year to be reading.

That’s why we became an affiliate of Bookshop.org, a website that allows you to buy books and support independent bookstores and organizations doing meaningful work. As an affiliate, Breach Collective receives 10% of sales made via our organization’s link. So, when you shop on the site (with the Breach logo in the upper left) you're supporting our work and independent bookstores across the country. It's a win-win!

Our staff and board are able to curate bookshelves to include our favorite titles. See what's on our bookshelf so far if you need some inspiration for something new to read or gift, and check out our staff picks below.

Whether you purchase directly off our shelves or not, as long as you’re using the Breach link, 10% of sales will go to support our work with frontline communities fighting for climate justice! And if you celebrate Christmas and plan on gifting books, make sure to order today to get guaranteed delivery in time for the holiday.

STAFF PICKS

Caitlin's Pick:

Poet Warrior by Joy Harjo

Reading this book is an immersive experience. In a mix of prose and poetry, Joy Harjo, a member of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation and the first Native American to serve as U.S. poet laureate, takes you on her life journey from before her birth to becoming a Poet Warrior. This book is perfect for any teller or lover of stories.

Danny's Pick:

Work Won't Love You Back by Sarah Jaffe

One of my favourite musicians, Steve Earle, is fond of saying “If you have a boss, you need a union.” Sarah Jaffe’s excellently-researched book explains why this is the case, even in those sectors and jobs that are often described as “labors of love.” An essential text for understanding the historical and structural roots of the problems that exist in modern workplaces, and for growing worker consciousness and solidarity.

Josie's Pick:

Mutual Aid by Dean Spade

Mutual Aid captures where we are at in understanding the interconnectedness of social justice fights and our work. It also really helps readers visualize what the answer to these seemingly never-ending crises is, us.

Meg's Pick:

Migrations by Charlotte McConaghy

One of my favorite reads from this year, Migrations is a visceral epic that left me breathless. It's both a grand adventure story and speculative climate fiction. McConaghy's stunning prose gets to the heart of grief, love, and what it means to live in a near future that has catastrophically changed. This one is for all of my fellow deep feelers.

Nick's Pick:

Capitalism and the Web of Life by Jason W. Moore

Capitalism and the Web of Life explores the deep relationship between economic production, the exploitation of humans and non-human nature to produce profit, and the hidden costs of so-called progress. This book thoroughly ties together major themes of "World Ecology" in a coherent and readable way while giving us solid footing to plan a future where we care for all of human life without unsustainable environmental degradation.

Sherri's Pick:

Pleasure Activism by adrienne maree brown

Pleasure Activism is an intriguing reframing of pleasure and how we experience and cultivate it, and why we should make social justice the most pleasurable human experience.
