We “slaughtered” Jeremy Corbyn, says Israel lobbyist — Electronic Intifada (1/10)
A prominent Israel lobbyist in the UK has claimed credit for last month’s electoral defeat of the Labour Party led by Jeremy Corbyn. “The beast is slain,” Joe Glasman delighted – Corbyn has been “slaughtered.” He rejoiced that “we defeated him” in the election. “They tried to kill us,” he ranted, but “we won.” Glasman leads the “political investigations team” at the Campaign Against Antisemitism, or CAA – an influential anti-Palestinian lobby group. He made his comments in a bizarre video rant addressed to his team of supporters that he posted online during the holiday break. The video was soon set to private. But left-wing Labour activists managed to download a copy and posted it on the Barnet Momentum Facebook page. In the video Glasman claimed he and his supporters beat Corbyn through a coordinated campaign using methods including “our spies and intel.”
Why India’s Hindu nationalists worship Israel’s nation-state model — Mondoweiss (1/10)
India’s Hindu nationalists and the Israeli right have a remarkable mutual affinity. Binyamin Netanyahu welcomed Narendra Modi to Israel in 2017 with these words: “Prime Minister Modi, we have been waiting for you for a long time, almost 70 years … We view you as a kindred spirit.” The two premiers, both battling for re-election in spring 2019, share a warm rapport, and regularly refer to each other on Twitter as “my friend Narendra” and “my friend Bibi.” The Modi-Bibi bonhomie rests on much more than personal chemistry, or even the Israeli military-industrial complex’s significant role in servicing Indian needs. It is rooted in the profound admiration of generations of Hindu nationalists for Zionism and its product, Israel, whose model of nation-state they seek to emulate in India.
200 Palestinian children arrested by Israel forces in Jerusalem neighbourhood — Middle East Monitor (1/10)
Israeli forces have detained an estimated 200 Palestinian children in the Issawiya neighbourhood of occupied East Jerusalem over the last few months, in many cases violating their basic rights. According to data from the Association for Civil Rights in Israel (ACRI), reported by Haaretz, more than 600 residents have been arrested since the launch of regular police raids in Issawiya, with residents and lawyers saying that “about a third of those who have been held are minors”. The report added that these raids have been characterised by “the violation of the rights” of detained Palestinian children, including “the use of force, night-time arrests, questioning not in the presence of their parents, rides in patrol cars for intimidation and unnecessary handcuffing”.
New poll shows nearly half of Democratic voters familiar with BDS support it; most voters oppose anti-BDS measures — Mondoweiss (1/9)
A new University of Maryland Critical Issues Poll gives us further insight into what Americans think about the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement 3,016 respondents were asked about BDS as part of the poll. 49% of them said they had heard of the movement. Among those who had heard of it, just 8% of Republicans said they “strongly or somewhat” support BDS. However, 48% of Democrats and 27% of independents said they did. Respondents were also asked how they felt about two common arguments regarding BDS. “BDS is a legitimate, peaceful way of opposing Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories,” reads the first argument, “Inspired by the South African anti-apartheid movement, BDS urges action to pressure Israel to comply with international law. Opposing Israeli policy does not equal anti-Semitism.” Overall, 43% disagreed with this argument; 69% of Republicans disagreed and 13% of Democrats.
Israel's defence minister launches annexation drive with cover from Trump — Middle East Eye (1/10)
Naftali Bennett, Israel's defence minister, is pushing through a series of rapid-fire measures to treble the occupied West Bank's settler population and annex all of the territory's Area C, which Palestinians fear could end any hopes of a Palestinian state. He is doing this, analysts told Middle East Eye, thanks to the political limbo Israel is caught in after two inconclusive elections, and with the tacit blessing that the Trump administration has given Israel's far right. This week, Bennett, a hawkish ultranationalist, revealed that he was launching a task force to impose Israeli sovereignty over Area C - 61 percent of the West Bank - and grant settlers an unprecedented right to own land privately.
What do Americans think of the BDS movement, aimed at Israel? — Brookings (1/8)
Even as Americans are preoccupied with the impeachment process and a raft of other news developments, the issue of U.S. policy toward Israel has not escaped our national debate as of late. President Trump’s December executive order on anti-Semitism, which some saw as an attempt to limit free speech on Israel policy, followed a July resolution in the House of Representatives that directly addressed the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement. Although BDS had not been on most Americans’ radar screens, it has suddenly become a subject of more mainstream conversation. How much do Americans know about BDS and what do they think about it? Does it matter for the American political process? The newest University of Maryland Critical Issues Poll provides some answers.
