Last month, I introduced a resolution of inquiry requesting President Biden to hand over all information and documentation regarding the United States Postal Inspection Service’s (USPIS) Internet Covert Operations Program (iCOP). Most Americans aren’t aware that the same organization that delivers their mail also runs a surveillance operation to monitor their social media posts – or the fact that this program has been alarmingly abused to infringe on Americans’ First Amendment freedoms. According to the Postal Service Office of Inspector General’s report, USPIS overstepped its law enforcement authority by spying on Americans – particularly pro-gun and anti-Biden activists – through the iCOP program. Due to my concerns with the surveillance operation and in response to Democrats’ failure to conduct proper oversight, I demanded answers and accountability on behalf of the American people. While Democrats ultimately blocked my measure to deliver desperately needed transparency, I remain committed to seeking the truth when Republicans retake the majority in January.

As you may know, the Department of Energy’s (DOE) Deputy Assistant Secretary of Spent Fuel and Waste Disposition in the Office of Nuclear Energy, Sam Brinton, was recently charged with felony theft. Back in September, Brinton took a woman’s suitcase from the baggage carousel at the Minneapolis-St. Paul Airport – despite not checking a bag prior to his flight. After initially lying to the police about the incident and using the luggage several times after stealing it, Brinton finally admitted to taking a suitcase valued at $2,325 and hiding the owner’s belongings in a hotel room. He was ultimately charged with felony theft and put on leave at the DOE.
While the Biden Administration has alarmingly embraced Sam Brinton’s disturbing activities as representative of the Department of Energy, it’s unacceptable to allow any individual with such a severe lack of judgment to influence policy. In response, I led 15 of my colleagues in sending a letter to DOE Secretary Granholm demanding Brinton’s resignation. Employing Brinton after both the felony theft charge and his admission of guilt exemplifies the Left’s adherence to soft-on-crime policies, refusal to deliver accountability, and disrespect for our government agencies. To make matters worse, Brinton was recently charged with a second felony – displaying a pattern of criminal behavior and poor judgment that is completely disqualifying. Due to our efforts to hold the Biden Administration accountable for prioritizing wokeness over competence, Sam Brinton has officially been fired from the Department of Energy. Make no mistake, this is only the beginning – accountability returns to Washington on January 3rd.

Last week, the House passed the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for Fiscal Year 2023. However, I couldn’t lend my support to this package. As a 28-year Navy combat veteran, I certainly understand the importance and necessity of ensuring we maintain the most lethal military force in the world. Yet while investing in our military to strengthen our nation’s readiness and defense capabilities is the intended and chief purpose of the NDAA, Democrats have weaponized this critical package to advance radical policies and wasteful spending.
Additionally, while I applaud my Republican colleagues for removing President Biden’s unconstitutional vaccine mandate that has unquestionably damaged our military’s physical readiness, recruitment, and retention, the NDAA falls short of reinstating service members who were unlawfully expelled from service for refusing the COVID-19 vaccine — including troops who were denied religious exemptions. It is imperative that we restore and repay every solitary service member who faced this medical tyranny and grave injustice.

Last month, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service released their semi-annual Farm Labor Report, which included an annual average fiscal-year increase across all states of 7% on the Adverse Effect Wage Rate for 2023. The unsustainable and unrealistic increase noted in the report, which will soon be implemented by the Department of Labor, will have disastrous effects on our farmers and growers — in addition to the burdensome costs passed down to consumers already battling soaring inflation.
In response, I led 45 of my colleagues in sending a letter to U.S. Department of Labor Secretary Marty Walsh expressing concerns about the potential average hourly wage rate increase for users of the H-2A visa program and urging the Secretary to put American farmers, rural communities, and consumers first by retracting the recommended wage raise hike. Georgia alone faces an unprecedented 14% one year increase, which will detrimentally harm our agricultural production and unquestionably benefit foreign competitors. I remain committed to helping the hardworking farmers and growers in the Ninth as they battle the Biden Administration’s severely misguided policies, and I look forward to updating you on this critical issue in the coming weeks ahead.

Lawmakers remain in Washington this week, where the lame duck funding fight is in full swing. Just last night, House Democrats passed a short-term spending bill to avert a government shutdown and buy liberals more time to cobble together a full funding package. Unfortunately, rather than prioritizing a balanced budget and fiscal responsibility, Speaker Pelosi and Senate Leader Schumer are determined to ram through a pricey package chock full of wasteful spending and Big Government Socialist policies before leaving town for Christmas. I refuse to greenlight Democrats’ last-ditch effort to squander taxpayer dollars on their dangerous agenda before the Left’s one-party rule in Washington ends on January 3rd when House Republicans retake the majority. I remain committed to standing firm in the funding fight in order to oppose Democrats’ out-of-control spending that will only burden you and your family with additional economic turmoil.
