Jack, take a walk with us.
It’s the perfect time for a stroll through a landscape so magical that it is known as the “fairyland of the redwood range”, Montgomery Woods State Natural Reserve.
Let’s search among the towering old-growth giants. Can you pick out the tree once thought to be the tallest coast redwood tree in the world?
Pause to hear the gentle sound of the breeze rustling through ferns. Listen for the soft gurgle of the creek, carrying fish through the Big River watershed.
Right on the western edge of the reserve is the border with Atkins Place. The League just acquired this amazing 453-acre property which overlooks Montgomery Woods and Mendocino County. With the help of generous supporters like you, our hope is to soon add it into the reserve.
If not for the dense redwood canopy, we might be able to look up from the trail and see hilltops of the sweeping Weger Ranch – sharing a 1.25-mile border with the reserve. Home to mature second-growth and some old-growth trees, this land could serve as a critical buffer for the wonders of Montgomery Woods – but only if it’s not developed.
This is the next step in our Montgomery Woods Initiative: Our long-term project to forever protect this otherworldly corner of the redwood range.
The League has a rare opportunity to purchase a conservation easement here, and we rely on the generosity of redwood supporters like you to complete essential projects like this – thank you.
We can’t wait to join you one day for a real hike out here and get the chance to look around and say that this forest is protected forever.
With gratitude,
Save the Redwoods League
