Friend,

Back in 2020, Alaska adopted a ranked choice voting system in order to put more power into the hands of voters. And after the results of this year’s midterm elections, it’s clear the ranked choice system did exactly that.

In the first round of the Senate race this year, Lisa Murkowski was only ahead of radical Kelly Tshibaka by 0.8%. That is way too close for comfort. It was in the next round when 2nd choices were taken into account that Murkowski’s lead increased to a comfortable 7.4%.

This highlights the value of rank choice voting perfectly: By taking into account voters 2nd and 3rd choices, rank choice voting prevents extreme candidates winning with solely a rabid base. It leads to elections more accurately reflecting the will of more people. And that’s exactly why partisan extremists want to get rid of it.

Since its adoption in Alaska, ranked choice voting has been protected by a provision in the Alaska Constitution which prevents lawmakers from repealing an initiative for two years after its passage. That means that next year, lawmakers could very well put our ranked choice system on the chopping block.

That’s why we’re asking you to make a monthly donation of any amount to BAFAF today — we need to gear up for future elections and to fight to preserve rank choice voting, effective voting systems, and our democracy.
