Dear John -
Good news: the EAGLE Act, which would have increased green card wait times for Iranians to at least 7 years and by as much as decades, was BLOCKED just as it was about to go to a vote last night.
Thank you for your calls, messages, and organizing to help prevent this harmful attempt to cut off opportunities for Iranians and the Iranian-American community. In the end, those who wanted to push the green card backlog problem onto the many smaller immigrant groups to benefit a select few did not have the votes – thanks to your efforts.
Without NIAC and our community – and a diverse coalition of fellow immigrant communities – coming together to stop the EAGLE Act, we would be facing a disaster for our communities. But when we organize and mobilize, we can safeguard our community and stand up for democratic values across the board.
We know this is a difficult time, and much of our focus is on the Iranian people struggling for freedom inside Iran. But we also cannot take our eye off developments happening here in Washington, whether they be on foreign policy, immigration, or civil rights. Thanks to your support, NIAC will always be here to champion our community’s interests and ensure that our community has an eye on the issues that impact us and a seat at the table where decisions are actually made.
Thank you,
Jamal Abdi President, NIAC P.S. We believe this means the EAGLE Act is off the table and will not become law, though will continue to keep a close eye on it in the event that proponents force it back on to Congress’ agenda.
