Dear Muslim Advocates Friends and Family — As-Salaam-Alaikum,

The criminal system disappears far too many of our brothers and sisters into precarious and coercive prisons. Instead, we need decarceral systems and policies that build real safety for all members of our communities. In the meantime, we also need people imprisoned by the state to survive to reach liberation. Supporting Muslims enduring incarceration is one of the ways Muslim Advocates shows up for our communities. We routinely fight alongside jailhouse lawyers challenging oppressive policies that deny salah in groups of three or more [[link removed]] , fail to accommodate fasting during Ramadan [[link removed]] , or that disrespect the faith of immigrants detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement [[link removed]] . A groundbreaking report [[link removed]] we published in 2019, found that Muslims are shockingly overrepresented, with nearly 10 percent of people incarcerated in state prisons identifying as Muslim.

This coming year, Muslim Advocates plans to launch a new digital database of religious accommodation policies for Muslims of every state prison Salah, Jumu’ah, Work Proscriptions, Burial Practices, Head Coverings, Diets, Ramadan Fasts, and Religious Property. This database compiles the painstaking work of filing numerous open records act requests with each state prison system after exhaustively identifying and assessing scattered public data. No compilation of religious accommodation policies for Muslims in state prisons currently exists, making it difficult for those challenging restrictive policies to conveniently locate examples of more accommodating policies.

Our interactive platform can be used by advocates inside and outside of prison systems, by providing them with ready examples of more-accommodating policies that can be used to push for improvements in their local facilities. The team at Muslim Advocates has ambitious plans to share and make this content accessible to a wide range of users, most importantly to incarcerated Muslims and their families.

As we approach the year-end giving season, we hope you will consider helping Muslim Advocates create different versions of this valuable tool to get resources into the hands of on-the-ground partners and incarcerated people.

We appreciate your continued support of our mission and look forward to staying connected in the coming months as this project progresses.

With gratitude,
