John,

A recent article in Yale Environment 360 presents the case for moving endangered species to save them from extinction. Scientists warn that climate change and other environmental threats could require relocating some endangered species outside their historical ranges.

Now, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service officials are proposing rules enabling them to use endangered species relocation as a new — and likely — controversial conservation tool.

With wildlife like the bald eagle, the Guam kingfisher, and many other species unable to keep up with the pace of habitat destruction and climate change, human assistance to relocate these species could prevent their extinction.

But saving one species with this proposed plan could prove fatal for others. We’ve seen throughout history the dire consequences when invasive species are introduced to new habitats, like the Melaleuca in the Everglades or the brown tree snake in Guam. Whether a species is introduced intentionally or by accident to new habitats, they can disrupt the food web and create new problems down the road.

Now that you know both sides of the debate, here’s what we want to know:

Do you think endangered species should be relocated to avoid extinction?
