Friend – Earlier this week, we were able to deflect yet another attempt to ban abortion in Iowa. Along with Planned Parenthood and the Emma Goldman Clinic of Iowa City, we once again won in court, thwarting an unusual strategy by Governor Kim Reynolds to resurrect a years-old law, which would have banned nearly all abortions in Iowa as early as six weeks, which is before many people know they are pregnant. It would have prevented about 98 percent of all abortions in Iowa. Fortunately, almost as soon as that law was signed in 2018, it was blocked by the courts. On Monday, a district court ruled against Governor Reynolds, keeping abortion in Iowa legal – for now. The other side has already said they're going to appeal this important ruling. And, we're about to go into another Iowa legislative session in January. Anti-choice politicians will continue to do all they can to end reproductive rights in Iowa. Specifically, they're poised to take the next step in moving along a constitutional amendment that would change the Iowa Constitution to state that there is no right to an abortion in Iowa. That would be devastating to Iowa women and reproductive rights. The amendment would then be put on the ballot, probably for the November 2024 election. If it were passed by voters, politicians could ban abortion in Iowa without worrying about the courts blocking those laws. But there's something you can do, right now. We are building a statewide network to educate voters about the proposed abortion constitutional amendment, to help make sure other Iowans know exactly what it is, what it would do, and the terrible consequences it would have for Iowans. Find out more about what you can do to educate and mobilize voters, and preserve the right for Iowans to have control over their bodies and their lives.
