The final version of the 2023 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) improves military readiness, eliminates the vaccine mandate for service members, and removes many “woke” requests from earlier versions, though some bad policies—such as watered-down bans on Chinese semiconductors—remain. For the most part lawmakers focused on warfighting and lethality and the results are favorable for those who support a strong national defense.

As China and other adversaries expand their nuclear forces, the U.S. faces a significantly more dangerous nuclear environment than previously anticipated. The current nuclear force structure will likely not suffice to protect Americans from these growing threats and may increase the chance of deterrence failure.

The F-35’s thrust, fuel efficiency, and cooling demands already exceed the F135 engine’s capabilities, and updating it will not support future system requirements. The Defense Department should move immediately to acquire and field an adaptive engine that can meet F-35 system demands through at least 2040.
