Last week, Rishi Sunak’s government approved the UK’s first new coal mine in 30 years. The decision was immediately slammed by the government’s own scientific advisors because the carbon emissions from this new mine will be equivalent to 200,000 extra cars on our roads every year. To put it simply - this is climate vandalism. [1]

So why has Rishi Sunak done this? To keep us warm? To lower energy bills? Unfortunately, it’s for none of those reasons. The coal will be used for steel production, not to produce energy. [2]

And to make matters worse, British steel manufacturers don’t even want the stuff. 85% of the coal will be shipped abroad. This new mine is unquestionably a dangerous waste of time. [3]

But there’s a chance we can stop it. Recent events have proved that Rishi Sunak U-turns when we put him under enough public pressure. Last week he was forced to move towards relaxing the ban on onshore wind farms in England after a huge public campaign pushed him to give ground. This shows what’s possible when enough of us come together and demand change - so please can you sign this urgent petition calling on Rishi Sunak to cancel the new mine? [4]

I don’t know about you, but I'm sick of feeling like this country is moving backwards instead of forwards. Rather than sending people down coal mines again the government should be taking advantage of developing technology to create new jobs in fossil fuel-free green steel production. Rishi Sunak needs to embrace a cleaner, greener, more renewable future! [5]
