Yesterday, Independent Women’s Forum, through its Center for Economic Opportunity and Independent Women’s Law Center, filed a comment urging the U.S. Department of Labor to rescind its proposed rulemaking “Employee or Independent Contractor Classification Under the Fair Labor Standards Act” and leave the 2021 Rule in place in order to protect freelance workers. 

Currently, more than 60 million workers nationwide participate in freelance work; independent contractors make up over 36% of our nation’s labor force. About half of independent contractors are women, so proposed regulations that curtail independent contracting makes this a concerning issue for us.

Florida Divests $2B From BlackRock

Jimmy Patronis, Florida’s chief financial officer, announced on December 1st that the Sunshine State will divest $2 billion dollars worth of assets invested in BlackRock. More specifically, the State Treasury instructed Florida’s custody bank to freeze “$1.43 billion in long-term securities and remove them as the manager of approximately $600 million worth of short-term overnight investments.”
