Today marks the 10th anniversary of the Sandy Hook shooting that took the lives of 20 children and 6 adults. In the decade since, America has witnessed over 4,000 mass shootings where over 22,000 people were either injured or killed.
While we know statistically that mass shootings don’t account for the majority of gun violence injuries or deaths, the trauma inflicted on the communities and families of the victims, as well as the communities across America that fear a similar tragedy in their own neighborhoods, is immeasurable. American children, teenagers, and adults should not fear going to school, the grocery store, places of worship, or places of entertainment.
We have seen noteworthy steps taken to address gun violence in this country from Congress to State Legislatures to community groups. There is more work to be done, especially here in Pennsylvania, but I am determined to see vital legislation like waiting periods and extreme risk protection orders become law in PA.
