Coming Soon: Public Charge Rule Effective Dec. 23
Dear John,
This week we’re bringing you updates on our plans to help engage community members regarding the upcoming public charge effective date, an opportunity to help shape USCIS's community engagement on the new public charge regulation, and a webinar to understand the effects of the new rule. Read on to learn more.
Update: Public charge effective date is December 23
As you know, the Biden public charge regulation will take effect on Friday, December 23. This means that green card applications filed on or after that date will be processed under the final regulation [[link removed]] published by DHS in September. Because the effective date is so close to winter holidays, we encourage partners to redouble their community outreach efforts in January. We will be releasing updated partner toolkit [[link removed]] materials in January to support you in this work.
As we mentioned when the regulation was finalized, litigation is possible. We are monitoring this possibility and will keep you posted as we learn more. As always, PIF working groups (learn more and join here [[link removed]] ) are the best way to stay plugged into timely developments.
Take Action: Partner with USCIS to thaw the chill
USCIS is planning outreach efforts in local communities, aimed at increasing immigrant families’ awareness of the Biden public charge regulation and thawing the public charge chilling effect. Events and other outreach efforts are getting underway early in 2023, and we encourage PIF member organizations to partner with DHS to improve the effectiveness of these efforts. If you would like to learn more, please email Alicia Wilson of our Community Education Working Group at [email protected] [[email protected]] . We will connect you with CIS community relations teams in your area and work alongside you in any collaboration with CIS. Thanks for your partnership in making sure immigrant communities are informed about the change in policy and reassured about their safety.
Webinar: Understanding the Public Charge Rule and Building Trust in Our Communities
The new public charge rule goes into effect on Dec. 23. Join Feeding America [[link removed]] , the Food Research & Action Center (FRAC) [[link removed]] and the Protecting Immigrant Families Coalition for a webinar on Dec. 19 at 4.p.m. ET where we’ll share updates on the new regulation. Attendees will also hear from network advocates who work with impacted communities to build trust, so that families can access the benefits for which they are eligible. Register here for the webinar [[link removed]] . This webinar will build on a webinar that FRAC had with USDA earlier this fall. Update: Urging DHS to Effectively Community with Immigrant Families
This week, PIF sent a letter to DHS Secretary Mayorkas addressing the coming effective date of the new public charge regulation. We urged DHS to lead an effective, government-wide community engagement strategy to inform immigrant families about the new public charge regulation. As mentioned earlier in this newsletter, we’re also working with community organizations to connect them with the DHS community relations teams. We’ve offered partnership and recommendations to further the goal of reducing the chilling effect that continues to be an obstacle to families’ access to health care and aid. We will continue to keep you updated with any new action as a result of this letter.
