John, it’s official! We launched our new plan!

For those of you who don’t know, when Sunrise launched in 2017 it had a plan – a plan to make the climate crisis a political priority and the Green New Deal a household name. We did that, and MORE — we won *imperfect* climate legislation, elected GND allies in the Squad, and fought back a Red Wave on election day.

But what we’ve also learned through that process is we still have a LOT of work to do if we’re going to build the movement of our dreams and win a Green New Deal. And we have a new plan.

So what’s the plan? Coming off of a really successful five years of raising the urgency on climate and forcing the federal government to deliver bold action, we’re going back to our roots and focusing on building an unstoppable movement to win a Green New Deal.

Our plan is a multi-year strategy to elect even more Green New Deal champions at all levels of government, organize high school students to transform schools, build power in Black, brown, and working class communities, and pass Green New Deal policies in cities and towns across the country.

How are we going to do that?

We’re taking over schools. We’re bringing the movement for the Green New Deal to every student, classroom and school in this country with the Green New Deal for Schools campaign. Together, we will fix our buildings and buses, force our schools to teach us the truth about the climate crisis, make student lunches free, create pathways to green jobs, and ensure our schools have a plan for when a climate disaster strikes. And with millions of students on our side, we will transform our schools and win a Green New Deal. Read more about it here.
We’re organizing thousands of young people to take over communities. We’re launching the Green New Deal for Communities campaign to build power in Black, brown and working class communities, knock on the doors of our neighbors, elect new Green New Deal leaders, march in the streets and build an unstoppable groundswell of public support until it’s impossible for our politicians to ignore us. We will win free public transportation. We will win more safe public housing. We will win good jobs for all. And together, we will stop the climate crisis. Read more about it here.

Organized people power across the country – especially in swing states – is key to shifting national politics and policies. We will create the conditions to shape the 2024 election and force the government to pass even more Green New Deal policies on a national scale come 2025.

We’re at a moment when we can’t resort to the same tactics we’ve used in the past. It’s time for us to get serious about building long-term power and organizing a movement across race and class that can take over every level of government and transform society.
