Senate Makeup
It has been an eventful week in the United States Senate.
First, the runoff election in Georgia saw U.S. Sen. Raphael
Warnock (D-GA) win a full, six-year Senate term with 51.4% of the vote. It gave Democrats a 51-49 margin, but did
not change party control of the Senate because in the current 50-50 Senate, the
Democrats have control since Vice President Kamala Harris, who is also President
of the Senate, can break ties in their favor. It does change the party breakdown
on Senate committees, which have also been equally split, reflecting the makeup
of the full Senate. Now in January with the Democrats taking full control, they
will have a one-vote margin on committees. This will enhance their ability to
move legislation in a timelier way.
The
Senate Democratic caucus for the 118th Congress met this past
week and elected its leadership. U.S. Sen. Patty Murray (D-WA) will become the
President Pro Tempore, a role that places her third in line of succession to the
presidency behind the Vice President and Speaker of the House. Rounding out the leadership are:
Majority Leader U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer (D-NY)
Majority
Whip U.S. Sen. Richard Durbin (D-IL)
Chair, Policy and Communications
Committee U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D-MI)
Chair, Steering Committee U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN)
Finally, U.S. Sen. Kyrsten Sinema (I-AZ) announced she was changing her party affiliation to Independent
from Democrat. This will not change makeup of the Senate noted above because she
is expected to caucus with Senate Democrats. There are two other Independent Senators
who caucus with the Democrats, U.S. Sens. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) and Angus King (I-ME).
