This Week in Washington, D.C.

The U.S. House of Representatives is in session this week. Votes took place on Monday and Tuesday and are expected today through the end of the week.

Yesterday, my resolution honoring the 20^th anniversary of the George McGovern-Robert Dole Food for Education and Child Nutrition Program, was adopted on the House Floor.

The resolution pays tribute to Kansas legend and hero of mine, Senator Bob Dole, and Senator George McGovern. Twenty years ago, Senators Dole and McGovern reached across the aisle to gather bipartisan support for their noble idea – to authorize the U.S. Department of Agriculture to purchase surplus American agricultural commodities from producers and donate those products to countries across the globe struggling with food insecurity. Since then, the Program has provided 5.5 billion school meals to 31 million school-age children in 48 countries worldwide.

I am grateful for Representative Jim McGovern’s consistent work on this issue and am pleased that the House adopted our resolution by unanimous consent.

Farm Bill Impact Series

In 2022, I delivered 16 speeches on the House Floor about various Farm Bill programs and titles that I believe Congress must understand and support ahead of the 2023 authorization.

I will continue to advocate for American farmers, ranchers, and agricultural producers because they are the lifeblood of this country. They keep us fed, fueled, and clothed – and they have earned the unwavering support of Congress. I will be delivering installments of the Farm Bill Impact series in the 118th Congress, and I look forward to the 2023 reauthorization of the Farm Bill because it’s an opportunity for Congress to say, unequivocally, “we stand with farmers.”

Meeting with Kansas Farm Bureau

I was pleased to meet with Kansas Farm Bureau and their new president, Joe Newland, yesterday.

We discussed issues important to Farm Bureau members - like the listing of the lesser prairie-chicken as threatened on the endangered species list, a new Waters of the U.S. rule, and the upcoming Farm Bill. I have worked tirelessly to ensure voices like those of the Kansas Farm Bureau are heard on all fronts. I have introduced legislation to amend the Endangered Species Act, requiring congressional approval before an administration adds any species to the endangered species list. I have urged the Biden Administration to remove the regulatory red tape around water on private property. I am working towards a better, stronger Farm Bill in 2023.

President Newland has a track record for producer-focused advocacy, and I am excited to work with him in his new role and to continue working with Kansas Farm Bureau on these issues. Kansas Farm Bureau knows well that food and agricultural policy are of the utmost importance and are my top priorities in Congress.

K-State crops team wins National Championship

Congratulations to the Kansas State University crops team on being named national champions at the Kansas City American Royal Collegiate Crops Contest! The team placed first in all three categories: grain grading, seed analysis, and plant and seed identification.



Kansas State University's world-renowned crop science programs are paving the way for innovative agricultural production and conservation and are training the next generation of producers along the way. Congratulations, again, to the 2022 crops team on their winning season. The future of Kansas food and agriculture is bright with agricultural leaders like these.
