John,
We saw a lot this cycle. While we’re proud to send Greg Casar and Summer Lee to Congress, the reality is that several of our groundbreaking candidates were kept from joining the Squad by a relentless torrent of outside spending.
Sam Bankman-Fried, a crypto-billionaire, poured tens of millions of dollars into establishment Democratic campaigns this cycle. While the Democratic establishment embraced his big money, he hid behind PACs to take down two Justice Democrats — Jessica Cisneros and Nina Turner.
Sam Bankman-Fried spent millions of dollars to defeat two progressive women of color who unapologetically fight for working people. This is nothing new, but now progressives like us are organized and we’ve shown the establishment that our candidates can and will win.
While Nina and Jessica were organizing in their communities for change, crypto-billionaire Saml Bankman-Fried hid behind his money and backed corporate, conservative incumbents like Henry Cuellar — the most anti-abortion Democrat in the House.
Now, this billionaire has openly admitted he donated tens of millions more to Republican candidates, and he’s been arrested for fraud, money laundering, and campaign finance violations. It’s no surprise to us when billionaires and far-right groups show their true colors — putting their profits and interests above democracy.
Corporate mega-donors have too much at stake to allow Justice Democrats to take power in Congress. We threaten the status quo, and that scares them. But the fact remains that in too many races, money wins out in the end.
In solidarity,
Team JD
