John,

Last week, we asked you to participate in a brief survey to gauge the top priorities Democrats should focus on as we enter 2023.

I’m so grateful to everyone who submitted a response – the information we gather from this survey will help guide Democrats Serve as we continue to support Democrats with public service backgrounds in 2023 and beyond.

I want to share some key findings from the survey:

81% of you believe curbing gun violence should be a top priority for Democrats. We know that elected officials with a background in public service have a unique perspective on the impact of gun violence on our communities, and we need more of their voices in office to advocate for this issue.

Protecting voting rights is another top issue. We’ve watched in recent years as GOP legislatures and state officials rig the system to suppress the voices of voters, especially marginalized voters. We urgently need to support public service pros who will fight to make every voice heard in our democracy.

Many of you are also concerned about the future of our democracy and holding bad actors accountable. After an election with more right-wing extremist candidates than ever before, Democrats Serve is committed to supporting candidates who will safeguard our fundamental freedoms.

If you didn’t get a chance to submit a response to our survey yet, I encourage you to do so! [[link removed]] Hearing from our supporters is important as we look ahead to the coming years.

Thank you again,

Brett Broesder

Democrats Serve is a national organization that backs Democrats running for office with frontline public service backgrounds, including first responders, firefighters, social workers, police officers, prosecutors, judges, public defenders, educators, and more.

Democratic candidates with professional experience serving their communities in government have a pragmatic approach to governing and know how to get things done, making for strong narratives and an ability to connect with voters uniquely.

However, when running for office, they often lack access to the professional campaign staff and wealthy donor networks that non-working class candidates do.
