John, I’m Georgia Smith and I am a trans woman. I’m here to share with you -- as the child of a parent who attended a PFLAG meeting -- how much PFLAG has impacted my life. My family is from a small town in Idaho. I came out as a trans woman in 2015, and it was hard for my mom at first -- she always saw me as her “baby boy.” But I was still figuring things out and wanted to transition my way, and I wasn’t ready to provide answers to her questions. When I could not give my mom the support she needed, I asked PFLAG to do it for me. It was through PFLAG Boise that she got that support to love and affirm my journey. Her attending PFLAG let her be a part of my transition. Nurture and support more parents like mine with a gift to PFLAG National today. I never forgot what PFLAG did for me and my mom. So when I moved to Oregon two years ago, I decided to give back to the organization that helped my mom and me by joining my local PFLAG chapter. Today, I’m a board member of PFLAG Central Oregon Coast and an outreach community leader for a local nonprofit, supporting LGBTQ+ youth in our area. In addition to our meetings for parents and families of LGBTQ+ loved ones, we offer support and resources to trans and nonbinary people in our community. I don’t know where I’d be today without PFLAG, and I’m honored to give back by encouraging more people to get involved and support this life-saving organization. Please, consider a donation to PFLAG National of any amount to support LGBTQ+ people and those who love them. You can make a difference in a family like mine. Thanks for hearing my story – I'm grateful for your support. Warmly, Georgia Smith (she/her) Board Member, PFLAG Central Oregon Coast on behalf of PFLAG National |
