Celebrating 40 Years of Sanctuary Support!

“Companionship has brought a quality of life to Mars...that even the best caregiving practices couldn’t match.”

Mars was singly housed at a lab, which is perhaps the greatest cruelty for social animals like primates. Not only has he suffered from loneliness, but it’s been hard for him to trust and develop relationships. However, thanks to Timon’s gentle nature, the two have become friends! Primates Incorporated gave Mars and Timon the special support they needed to make their friendship happen. This is something that a sanctuary can best provide and it’s why our support for sanctuaries and the animals in their care has been such an important part of AAVS’s mission.

Forty years ago, in December 1982, AAVS awarded its first sanctuary grant to a Texas nonprofit that was established to house a group of monkeys released from research. What a wonderful idea! AAVS realized that our advocacy to free animals from labs is complete only when it includes a commitment to the care of individual animals. Combining those related goals brings our mission full circle and connects us to the animals we love and respect.

Since that first grant, AAVS has awarded over $4 million to sanctuaries caring for animals released from labs. Our Sanctuary Fund is one of our most rewarding programs and we’re so happy to share how your donations are helping animals recover from their use in research.

Human Liver Chip Outperforms Animal Models

Over 90% of new drugs tested on animals fail in clinical trials. However, a study published on Nature.com provides the best evidence to date of a superior way to determine drug toxicity, without harming animals. Researchers tested an alternative made of human cells called liver-on-a-chip to measure its ability to predict drug safety and found it has an 87% accuracy rate. This chip technology has the potential to save countless animal lives.

Elon Musk’s Nueralink Under Investigation

Reuters is reporting that the U. S. Department of Agriculture’s Inspector General is investigating Elon Musk’s company, Nueralink, for alleged violations of the Animal Welfare Act. According to documents reviewed by Reuters, employees say pressure from Musk to accelerate development of medical devices tested on animals has resulted in “botched experiments.” Reportedly, Nueralink has killed an estimated 1,500 animals, including more than 280 pigs, sheep, and monkeys since 2018.

Monkey Smuggling Ring Exposed

The U.S. Department of Justice has charged Cambodian wildlife officials and members of a Hong Kong-based primate supply company with illegally exporting hundreds of long-tailed macaques, an endangered species and also the most used primate in U.S. labs. The animals were allegedly captured from the wild and falsely labeled as captive-bred. According to the indictment, nearly 1,500 of these monkeys were smuggled into the U.S. between 2018-2020.
