By the end of this year, 1 million people in the U.S. will have been killed or wounded by guns in the decade since Sandy Hook. We know some of their stories by city or place–Las Vegas, Orlando, Parkland, Buffalo, Uvalde. But the vast majority of those injuries and deaths never made national news.
Faced with each new tragedy, Congress did nothing. They did nothing, until they did. This Spring, Congress passed the first major gun safety bill in nearly 30 years. It is far from the comprehensive federal action we need. But it is remarkable progress.
The Alliance was born out of the Sandy Hook tragedy and we have been working ever since to prevent gun violence in all its forms. And although progress has been frustratingly slow at times and we have so much more work to do, we are proud of what we have accomplished. Together we have proven that progress is possible.
Today, I hope you will join us in remembering the victims of Sandy Hook as well as the survivors, their families, loved ones, and community. And I hope you will join us in recommitting to this movement to honor them, and all victims of gun violence, with action.
