Dear friends,
We’re writing today with news from Haiti. The PIH team, known locally in Haiti as Zanmi Lasante, is facing an incredibly challenging situation. Continued instability means even basic operations are dangerous, such as supply delivery and transit between clinics and hospitals.
At the same time, we’re actively responding to a deadly cholera outbreak. Lives depend on our team meeting that danger with action. The longer this outbreak grows, the more people it will kill.
So far, the PIH team has cared for 3,199 cholera patients at eight different clinics and hospitals. Across the nation, there have been 14,577 suspected cholera cases, and 288 people have been killed by the bacteria disease. Children younger than 5 years old are the most affected age group.

Now, good news: With your help, our rapid response is accelerating.
* Last week, our team established an airbridge, which means cholera response supplies are now being airlifted directly where they’re needed—making interception by gangs much less likely. Our first shipment has already arrived, and eight more are waiting in the wings.
* Cholera vaccines from the global stockpile arrived yesterday, and the mass-vaccination campaign is scheduled to begin on Friday. This operation will save lives and protect children and adults for up to five years.
* The PIH team is also setting up additional tent-based cholera treatment units (CTUs) which will provide much-needed space beyond our regular hospitals and clinics where people can receive lifesaving treatment for the deadly disease.
With major pieces of the epidemic response now up and running, we’re pushing as fast and as hard as we can to stop this deadly pathogen and save as many lives as possible. This illness can kill in as little as 24 hours if left untreated.
We can treat it. We can prevent it. Which means we can stop it.
Please, consider donating to provide lifesaving health care in Haiti. Your gift will be matched by a group of generous donors.
