ID cards exhibition features at anniversary event

The new Bonegilla ID cards exhibition has opened at Block 19, as part of the recent commemorations of the Bonegilla Migrant Reception and Training Centre's 75th anniversary.

The exhibition, which can be seen in the recreation hut, makes 264,000 migrant identification cards available to search both within the exhibition and online from home [[link removed]].

For those wanting to research cards, we suggest keeping the details simple or even trying part of the name as the cards contain spelling mistakes or changes of name.

Within the individual listings there is the option to submit for yourself or a family member stories, images or videos.

Once submitted, they will be assessed and loaded. They will then be on the public database and available tor other family members and future generations.

The Bonegilla Identity Cards Exhibition Project - linking people with history - was funded by the Victorian Government.

Tour bookings 2023

We offer guided tours of the original buildings of Block 19 for family or social groups, schools/education groups and bus companies, to name a few. Some tour groups choose to stay on with a catered morning tea or lunch or bring along their own picnic or lunch packs.

Tours can be customised to suit your needs but we suggest one and a half hours on site. In this time, one of our tour guides takes you through the history of the site, the stories and the original buildings, giving an extra depth of information and a chance to ask questions as you go.

Stop at the quiet room and leave a note of your feelings of the site if you wish, or read comments by people who were here. Feel free to take a little extra time to look back at displays.

A guided tour of the Bonegilla Migrant Experience is a great way to discover and learn more about this nationally significant place.

Please get in touch with the Bonegilla Migrant Experience Co-ordinator to organise your tour booking or family gathering for 2023.

The Arc memorial sculpture

Former residents and their families are invited to purchase a plaque which can be mounted on to our memorial sculpture, The Arc (previously known as the Tribute Wall).

The Arc honours the journey of all migrants who came through the Bonegilla Migrant Reception and Training Centre.

If you would like to add your family name to it, please complete the online form. [[link removed]]

The wall will continue to grow and there is no cut-off date. It can be added to at any time. Please note, plaques cannot be processed by Christmas but our staff can assist with creating a certificate to present to a family member, explaining that a plaque is due to be laid in their honour.

Plaques take six weeks from application, payment and approval to be mounted on the arc.
