Today, President Biden signed the Respect for Marriage Act, which
officially codifies marriage equality for LGBTQ+ and interracial couples
into federal law.

This is a major victory. For civil rights. For equality. For the right of
two human beings to love each other and obtain legal recognition of their
bond of marriage, while guaranteeing that right cannot be subverted by
partisan political actors on the Supreme Court.

Following the Supreme Court’s devastating Dobbs ruling that struck down
Roe v. Wade and the constitutional right to an abortion, conservative
Justice Clarence Thomas intimated that the Obergefell v. Hodges decision
guaranteeing marriage equality could be their next target.

Republican Senator Mike Braun of Indiana bizarrely suggested that Loving
v. Virginia, which permitted interracial marriages, could also be
unconstitutional.

This Democratic Congress has taken decisive action. It is difficult to
fathom how it is even necessary in 2022, yet Donald Trump and Mitch
McConnell’s actions stacking the Court with far-right ideologues made it
necessary. So we have acted, and today I’m asking you to join us:
