The pandemic wreaked havoc on many aspects of our stratified U.S. education system, causing a crisis of student absenteeism. Catching up students who’ve missed class is crucial, but as our detailed investigation ([link removed]) with the Arizona Center for Investigative Reporting found, many schools have been responding by suspending kids, a punishment that’s fallen disproportionately on Black and Hispanic students. Some educators, though, have begun to realize that suspending kids so they miss even more school is not helpful. ([link removed])

Also, as we continue our reporting on pandemic learning consequences, we bring you the latest research on third graders, who have struggled the most ([link removed]) to recover in reading.
