According to one new study, young children breathing polluted air are falling behind in school, and this is happening disproportionately in lower-income communities.
Fact: Everyone, especially our children, has a right to clean air.
However, John, recent studies are sounding the alarm bells. The research is unmistakable: many children are denied this fundamental right.
According to one new study, young children breathing polluted air are falling behind in school, and this is happening disproportionately in lower-income communities.
The research found young children living in neighborhoods with high poverty rates have a greater chance of being exposed to many different air pollutants, which can harm their early childhood development.
Increased exposure to air toxins as an infant can reduce math and reading abilities, causing them to fall behind very early on in their school career.
While other socioeconomic issues can affect school preparedness for children, the study shockingly found air pollutant exposure, when isolated, accounts for one-third of the impact compared to other concerns.
The impact of air pollution is more far-reaching than we think. We cannot ignore this additional challenge faced by children from lower-income communities.
John, our SEEC members in Congress are prioritizing tackling this challenge. That’s why they’re working tirelessly to preserve our rights to clean air. A generation of preschool and school-age children is counting on them.
Thanks to your help in 2020, SEEC PAC was able to re-elect over 95% of our pro-environment members to the U.S. House of Representatives — defying the odds on a night where Democrats lost seats. Now we are counting on you to help our SEEC members pass climate, clean energy and environmental justice policies in the 117th Congress while we undo the damage of the Trump Administration.
