The assistant clinical professor at the Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing at UC Davis quotes the recent report from the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine to emphasize why such actions are important: “People deserve to count and be counted.”

In a special issue, Nursing Outlook expands on the health equity goals outlined in the Future of Nursing 2020-2030 report. “Nurses Achieving Health Equity: Aligning the Field for Impact” articles touch on leadership, education, the value of coalitions, finding resources from foundations, and more. Many of the authors have also helped shape the Future of Nursing: Campaign for Action.
In its 50 episodes, the Pennsylvania Action Coalitions’s podcast for and about nurses has informed listeners about a range of topics, including pediatric home care, sexual assault nurse examiners, and health care for refugees. Now you can listen and win: To celebrate its milestone and spread news of At the Core of Care, the Action Coalition asks listeners to write a review, thus entering a drawing for a set of wireless headphones.
To increase health equity, the Delaware Action Coalition is planting the idea of a nursing career early in students from all backgrounds and writes about it in NASN School Nurse. “Moving Upstream to Address Health Inequity: A Middle School Program to Introduce Students to a Career in Nursing” describes how several school nurses in the Brandywine School District piloted the program, which was supported in part by a Campaign Nursing Innovations Fund award. Nurses are leaving the profession in unprecedented numbers, and donors are taking note—and action. The Chronicle of Philanthropy reports on who’s stepping up, including United Health, American Nurses Foundation, and Leonard A. Lauder. The article also notes continuing efforts from long-time supporters including the Duke Endowment as well as AARP, AARP Foundation, and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation through the Future of Nursing: Campaign for Action.
Most hospitals and health organizations are 501(c)3s, meaning that many nurses are eligible for loan forgiveness – whether they know it or not. AARP and the Savi Student Loan Repayment Tool can help you take charge of student loan debt by providing a personalized assessment of repayment and forgiveness options.

Podcasts We are Listening to:
Have a podcast about health equity and nursing that others should know about? If so, please tell us. Meanwhile, here are several powerful conversations to hear.
Volunteering in Ukraine: Jean Davison, DNP, RN, FNP-C, discusses her experience in the war-torn country in the Nursing Rounds podcast from the North Carolina Nursing Association.
Rear Admiral Aisha K. Mix, DNP, MPH, RN, assistant surgeon general and chief nurse officer for the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps is the latest guest speaker of the RN-Mentor series on equity, diversity and inclusion.
In completing her dissertation about nurses’ innovation, UPenn’s Marion Leary, RN, MSN, MPH, is asking nurses to tell her about their experiences. If you’re a nurse who has been part of an innovative course of action in the last three years, be it an activity, class, workshop, or other, please take a few minutes to fill out her questionnaire—and share it with others.
Institutions with programs that can help increase the number of nursing educators and expand and diversify the pipeline of nursing professionals are invited to apply for the U.S. Department of Labor’s new Nursing Expansion Grant Program, which offers $80 million to help ease America’s nursing shortage. One aim is to increase the number of educators; the second, to advance nurses in their educations and careers. Applications are due by January 6.
