It’s official: President Biden just signed the Respect for Marriage Act into law!
This is an incredibly historic moment, team. Soon after the Supreme Court’s disastrous decision to overturn Roe , the far-right made it clear they were coming for LGBTQ rights and other rights next. This legislation codifies protections for same-sex and interracial couples into federal law .
By passing the Respect for Marriage Act today, we’ve helped ensure that no couple will ever have to fear that they will be denied their right to marriage equality. LGBTQ couples deserve the same security, benefits, and recognition that legal marriage provides to every other American couple – and this law will guarantee that.
I am so proud to have voted to pass this legislation through the House. Since being elected to Congress, I have always fought for equal rights for the LGBTQ community. This is a huge step forward, but there’s still a lot of work we need to do .
With extremism and hateful rhetoric against LGBTQ people on the rise, we must keep fighting to pass more legislation like this that secures the freedom and safety of all Americans, regardless of who they love or how they identify. With Republicans set to take control of the House in January, I pledge to continue that fight in the next Congress.
