Hi John,
Thick-billed parrots are one of Mexico's native parrot species with vibrant plumage and a very special history. Once common in northern and central Mexico and the southwestern United States, they now nest exclusively in the Sierra Madre Occidental of Chihuahua and winter in several northern Mexican states.
I have had the opportunity to see these extraordinary birds in the wild, nesting in their flocks among the pines. Recently, this species was on the verge of extinction due to threats like hunting and logging. Wildlands Network intervened to save them, specifically by supporting community-based conservation leases to safeguard their habitat. Today, however, because of climate change, these birds now face another challenge that imperils their survival - wildfires.

Wildlands Network partners with local communities to provide firefighting equipment and workshop planning. With these resources, we're removing excess vegetation through controlled burns and constructing fire breaks in key areas. By being better prepared for the upcoming dry season, thick-billed parrots will survive the fire season.
