Dear john,
Today, I submitted a letter to President Joe Biden urging extension of the Center for Disease Control’s (CDC) Title 42 order, which is set to expire on December 21st. I was joined by Senators John Cornyn, Joe Manchin, and Rep. Tony Gonzales as a bipartisan delegation who recognize the severe repercussions of what is to come without Title 42.
Title 42 is critical to managing the current immigration crisis at our southern border. Without it, the United States risks compromising its homeland security across South Texas.
This past weekend, the U.S. Border Patrol El Paso Sector experienced a surge in illegal crossings: a 3-day average of 2,460 daily encounters. These encounters are going to increase without Title 42. With our current personnel and resources on the border already strained, we cannot afford to relinquish our only effective tool for controlling unlawful migration.
I am committed to providing the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) with effective policies that will maintain operational control over the southern border, and that do not require long processing times. However, creating those policies will take time. In the meantime, I urge President Biden to consider extending Title 42 beyond the December 21st expiration deadline.
