John,
Earlier this year, Senator Joe Manchin tried to force through a Dirty Deal in Congress that would undermine our progress on climate, and potentially take us in the wrong direction of expanding our reliance on fossil fuels. But because we fought, he has caved. Just this week, Manchin worked with Congress to bring back his dirty side deal and attach it to the annual spending bill. But his second attempt at fossil fuel handouts failed — for now.
We know the consequences of handouts to the fossil fuel industry: it means more pollution, more fracking, and more pipelines. Fossil fuel executives are in the pockets of not only Congressmembers but local legislators.
Across the country, we’ve seen the everyday, real consequences. In cities like Corpus Christi, oil and fracked gas companies are rushing to export more fossil fuels overseas. The region's export terminals, refineries, and pipelines have polluted local communities and made the area one of the country’s top contributors to climate change — and the fossil fuel industry wants to continue expanding its projects.
This year, we worked alongside organizers across the country to fight back — and elect climate champions to city councils and state legislatures. And we’ll need more folks to join us as we prepare to fight for the climate in the years ahead. Because Manchin and other elected officials in Congress will try to keep pushing Big Oil’s agenda.
Will you add your name to our growing movements to hold climate champions accountable, take on fossil fuel infrastructure, and support our work towards a Green New Deal future?
We believe in the power of our grassroots community to uplift, empower, and elect local leaders fighting for a Green New Deal and putting an end to our dependence on fossil fuels. That’s why we were proud to endorse over 50 climate fighters who ran on strong climate platforms this year.
We’re building on the groundwork we laid down this year to recruit, train, and endorse even more candidates in the coming years, but to do that, we need folks to join our movement.
Sign on to help elect more climate champions in the coming years. We can’t count on Congress to save us, so we’re taking up the fights to the local level to make the most impactful change for ourselves, our families, and our neighbors.
In solidarity,
