Hungry Americans Need Your Help
My name is Tamara Mizhquiri, I am Hunger Free America’s Director of the USDA National Hunger Clearinghouse, also known as the Hunger Hotline ([link removed]) .
The hotline is a resource for individuals and families seeking information on how to obtain food. With our team of devoted specialists, I work daily on the front lines of hunger, assisting low-income Americans across the country access emergency food resources and vital food programs such as SNAP and WIC. Hunger Free America operates the National Hunger Hotline on behalf of USDA, but the federal government only pays a portion of our expenses.
We work diligently to provide everyone we serve with a safe and dignified experience. We take calls from across the country, from Alaska to Florida, California to New York, and although hunger has fallen out of the news, calls to the Hunger Hotline keep increasing. We now help 30,000 families per year obtain food, more than triple the volume we were helping before the pandemic.
Growing up, my family needed some help, and we were fortunate to be able to access SNAP benefits to help us get through a tough time. I would not be where I am today without those benefits. Now, I help others every day access these vital benefits for their families and work to end the stigma against using social services. But I can’t do this work without your help.
