Dear John -
The House of Representatives is right now debating a bill - the EAGLE Act - that would drastically increase green card wait times for Iranian nationals and many other diverse immigrant communities. It will receive a critical vote in just a few hours. Particularly now, we can’t allow Congress to make it harder for Iranian nationals to secure a life-changing green card.
>> We need to take action now. Can you contact your Representative today and tell them to vote NO on the EAGLE Act? [8442286422]
Reports indicate the vote this afternoon may be close, with many progressives and members of the Congressional Black Caucus wary of its impact on diverse immigrant communities. If it passes, proponents will try to jam it through the Senate in the final days of the year - without serious debate on the harms it would cause. Contact your Representative [[link removed]]
Why do we need to stop this bill?
America’s green card backlog is a real problem - too few green cards are available and the number has not increased since 1990. If the bill passes, wait times for Iranian nationals and many other diverse communities will significantly increase by years and even decades.
We can’t afford to add uncertainty for those dependent on short-term visas and hoping for permanent residence, particularly with so much uncertainty on the ground in Iran.
This bill offers a zero-sum approach that would reduce the diversity of America's green card process and allow nationals from one or two large countries to monopolize it. Please take action today to stop this bill from moving forward.
In solidarity,
NIAC Policy Team
