Creating a Society Rooted in Justice

“Our sense of community encourages us to plant seeds of curiosity and watch them grow.” —Britt Hawthorne in Raising Antiracist Children

Q&A With Author Britt Hawthorne

Parents and caregivers are at the forefront in efforts to give children the foundation to build future inclusive societies. In this article from the Fall 2022 issue of Learning for Justice magazine, nationally recognized anti-racist writer and educator Britt Hawthorne reminds us that “When we’re genuinely in and relating to our community, we’ll sense the injustices and justices of the world. We will notice who is constantly erased in discussions and the communities most impacted by political decisions.”

Staff Picks: What We’re Reading

In the Fall 2022 issue of Learning for Justice magazine, we offer book recommendations for growing readers and their families that affirm identities, celebrate diversity and highlight justice. Britt Hawthorne, author of Raising Antiracist Children, recommends starting early with our children to create homes “rooted in justice, compassion and love.”

Resisting Dominant Narratives

In this hostile learning environment created by censorship and book bans, these LFJ book reviews encourage us all to keep reading—and writing—to counter the narratives that have historically excluded diverse perspectives. We resist the pressures of book bans and work to advance an expansive narrative that bolsters our dynamic, diverse democracy.
