Two Years of COVID Vaccines Have Prevented Millions of Deaths and Hospitalizations

It has been two years since the first COVID-19 vaccine was given to a patient in the United States. Since then, 80 percent of Americans have received at least one dose.


With Commonwealth Fund support, researchers from the University of Maryland, York University, and the Yale School of Public Health developed a computer simulation model to understand the impact of the vaccination campaign and inform future public health efforts. They estimate that from December 2020 through November 2022, vaccinations prevented 18.5 million additional hospitalizations and 3.2 million additional deaths in the U.S., while saving more than $1 trillion in medical costs.


Moreover, the millions of infections averted preserved hospital resources, kept children in school, and allowed businesses to reopen.
